Yeah, you can’t believe the rubbish they come out with here ! I got mine at Centrepoint in TST. Initially, he wanted $1750 but I saw it in Tin Cheung and asked there and they said $1680, so I asked the guy I know in Centrepoint and he dropped the price.

The price check websites here say it should be 1750 – weird. I expect it’ll drop with the next shipment to 1600.

So, according to the shopkeeper – the guy I always buy my stuff from – I’m the first person in Hong Kong to get this lens, he sent a guy all the way out to the Nikon warehouse here to pick up the lens for me (it wont be in stores for a couple days), I waited impatiently for an hour in the store to get it. Worth every dollar. I absolutely love this lens, it’s great for the event photography I do, because the 50mm f/1.8 is really awkward to use on a D80 (~75mm focal length).

I did a few test shots last night, and that’s the result I came up with, performance is pretty much identical to the 50mm f/1.8D I have, but the almost 50% increase in angle of view makes a big difference between the two lenses.

It was back in stock late last night at Amazon for 20 minutes also, cause i was able to order one that they say will ship out on Monday. Could be due to some cancellations.

Yep, I saw more than just purple fringing. Clear magenta to green shift from in front to behind the plane of focus on high contrast subjects with close focus.

It’s a budget lens. Some folks are gonna be disappointed. However, I still think it is fine for general use.

Whatever you do, don’t be a fool and place an order with Amazon right now. Amazon is selling through Beach Camera at this moment for $244.95. But if you go direct to Beach Camera’s web site, they are selling it for $199.95 (new, USA warranty, nothing fishy, I checked). Bad!

Stock cleared customs and appeared in the shops at lunchtime today in Hong Kong.

Most places are asking about HK$1650 which is US$210.

My initial impression is that it is a good lens – very similar performance to the 50mm f1.8, but at almost twice the price. Kinda like the AF-S vs the AF-D 50mm f1.4s !

because… gearheads LOVE to have every single lens, cameras, flashes, accessories, and whatever else nikon come out with. they get frustrated over a lens’ performance coming from a lens that they will NEVER use.
