its a dirty little secret that B&H gets a better deal than pretty much every camera store. It makes it very hard to compete. Although Nikon will deny this is obviously true. Why would they sell lenses below cost.

Oxfdblue
I am in the market for this lens too, the VR 70 - 300, it looks like I'll have to purchase it before February 1st. Do you recommend it for an all around good zoom lens, currently I only have the 18 - 135 DX ?

I have just discovered your site, this being my first read from, and post to, it.

I've been stalking a D300 body, and blew a couple of deals, expecting even lower prices given the ever worsening economy. I was wondering if the YEN/USD would eventually play a role in the pricing. IMO, the move to hike is foolish, since the YEN/USD relationship over the past 6-8 months has been mostly artificial, the root of it being the so called "carry trade" which is now being unwound by the hedge funds/financial industry - for those not familiar, Japan has had near zero interest rates for about a decade, so many players, would borrow yen at say 1%, then sell the yen and buy USD or Euros, which were then invested in various manners, this causing the yen to be artificially lower vs. the USD/Euro. Now, just the reverse is taking place: assets are being liquidated, then yen are being purchased so to repay the loans, once again creating an artificial condition. Since it is believed that the unwinding of said carry trade is nearing an end, so the demand for yen should weaken, and thus drive it down .....perhaps.

All in all, I am confident Nikon could have done more so to cut costs, and keep prices stable, just as so many others are doing. Perhaps before long, the headlines will read "Canon & Nikon plead guilty in price fixing charges" ?!?!?!?!

The bodies are not being raised since microchip prices are plummeting so, if anything they are bagging more profits on the bodies, which are nothing more than mini computers built to process images around PhotoShop (like) features.

But nuff rambling. I hope the above will help put things in some perspective.

Happy clicking.

You can't blame Nikon. You have to blame the U.S. debt. When will people understand that you just can't go on printing money, which we've been doing to support the war in Iraq and now to bail out the finance and car industries. If you print money, the money is worth less. If dollars are worth less, import prices are going to rise. The Dollar has lost about 35% to the Euro since the inception of the Euro.

Politicians have been selling the lie for years that we can fund wars and other ridiculousness and still reduce taxes. That's a myth (as we're now seeing.) But they can still get on TV and claim to have lowered taxes. But there's no point lowering taxes by 5% if the dollar is worth 10% less.

It's too bad we don't import more from the UK because the Pound is far weaker than the Dollar.

Contrary to this info that D3 ,D700 price would stay the same, B&H has raised D3 up to $4,349.99 today, up from $4,099 and its now out of stock. D700 is up $10 to $2329.99. Due to your excellent reporting on price rises across the globe I bought my D700 and 14-24mm/2.8 yesterday morning before the tiny $10 increase hit and will receive it tomorrow. I was certain the price on these long coveted items would no longer drift downward or hold steady with the global price increases and horrible yen to dollar trade. Yen ranged from 87 to 89 today. So after all these years, I've made my first Nikon camera purchase for what may become the best price for some time to come. Also for USA market the nikon instant rebate expires on 1-31-09 so D700 $300 bonus might not reappear with the dollar so weak versus yen?

Thank You nikonrumors!

I think the "new" and "old" are swapped on the 70-300 VR. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but as it is stated, it looks like the price is going down on that lens?

I saw on the B&H web site that this rebate will last until January 31, 2009. I think that they are very reliable.

I saw another post that B&H just ran out of the D3. You probably should buy sooner than later not knowing what there inventory is like. They may not have any by January 31st end of the rebate.

Good luck!

Me too! Interestingly the manager at the shop I got it at said he had a recent dealer session with Nikon where they notified him of these, also hinted that the MAP was intended to try and level the playing field between online and local retailers. He also noted that he had a session with Canon reps where nearly the same things were said, so this may end up being an industry wide trend.

No one likes price increases, but companies are in business for profit. I am sure that no company wants to increase prices in a weak economy, but companies do make decisions that they feel are best for their viability in the future. They may not always make the best or correct decision, but they do make decisions at the time with hand that they are dealt.

It is a balancing act in in unsure economic times to determine what can be charged versus what is required to maintain a reasonably secure financial company.

I am no expert, but I would assume that this will help resale value of Nikon lenses.

I am going to try to sell a Nikon AF-S DX 12-24mm lens after February 1st assuming there is a price increase.
