I have a review of these lens caps on my blog (see link above). They do a very good job for white balance and protect your lens better than the older ExpoDiscs.

when having no light metering device, I used to have (film ages...) a square piece of grey hard paper (non reflective) for difficult light metering situations; I put the paper on the place I wanted to meter and set the exposure accordingly (that grey tone was around the perfect exposure value, but needed to be very well placed, that needed care when direct sunlight..)

In order to achieve good white balance we could use a white surface wich is partially transparent and set the custom WB metering through it.
Everything that is partially transparent and perfectly white should work for that

Just white tissue paper works brilliantly for me. I point it to the light source.

It has been a slow weekend, hasn't it! No worries admin, I'm glad to see you're still putting something up, it keeps me checking back everyday, and there's almost always something to look at.

This has been done before. ExpoDisc had a lens cap version. Didn't work as well as the newer ExpoDiscs, which I must add work very well. I wouldn't want to be without it in mixed lighting situations.
