Gisele is right, there are no hints at all about AF-S 50/f1.8 in that interview.

There is nothing in the interview about film. He first talks about the new 50 mm f/1.4 AF-S. When asked about an new 50 mm f/1.8 AF-S he just says “nobody knows”. He is then asked if the current economic downturn is impacting Nikon sales, and he answers that there is still an increase in sales (4 % for compacts, 58 % for DSLRs). He then says that the Coolpix S210 is a big seller based upon its features combined with its low price. That’s all. No real rumours.

Not even a hint about a AF-S 50mm 1.8 ... The reporter mentioned it and apparently the Nikon-guy neither affirmed nor denied it. Or did he? So this is not significant in any way.

I mean, it seems to be logical to assume there will be a AF-S 50mm 1.8 eventually. Like there will be a AF-S 85mm 1.8 at some point in the future. I think it's just a matter of time before Nikon will migrate every focal length to a AF-S G-type mount. That's old news, so to speak.

Could you please post the complete transcript? I think it'd be interesting.

I transcribed the interview and it is mostly about the new 50 mm 1.4 and DSLR in general.

The reporter asks how come there is no 50 mm 1.8 since the 1.4 is so much more expensive. Johan, the Nikon guy then replys: "Good question, but as we say, we have not stopped making pruducts, we will have to see what tomorrow brings.

Then some talk about market-share on compact and DSLR and finally some questions about how the market has reacted to the D90 and if there will be more DSLR with film capabilities in the future.

As Mattias says: Just a hint about a 50 mm 1.8 AFS is what I can get out of the interview.

He also says that *if* they release an AF-S 50mm 1.8 it would probably (surprise) come out cheaper than the AF-S 50mm 1.4…

I dunno, lets be real. I know a Japanese guy who is 10 inches. And was way too big around. Also, my friend also dated some Koreans who were bigger than normal. I think the stereotypes are based on when people lived during times of war and ate mostly just rice and grains. Anyone living in California these days knows that this latest generation of Asian Americans, at least, are getting TALL. The number of 6 foot tall Korean guys, in particular, around my area, and like 5 foot 10 Korean girls is a lot these days! Seems like all that was needed was a more diverse diet. Us girls should give Asian men more of a chance. They are the same as all guys, and usually have better manners/family values, too, which is a plus.

But no, no real hints about future products, except the 1.8 hints then.

The only thing he hints at lens-wise is a 50mm AF-S f/1.8. Other than that he doesn’t seem to be very knowledgeable about the products. Probably just a marketing dweeb.
