the front nikon symbol could have been given the gold treatment for consistency’s sake. It doesn’t seem to have the special factor of previous nikon special editions.

The gold ring is a sign of professional grade Nikkors. The only way they could add it to Gold Edition Kit is to include 17-55mm f/2.8

Couldn’t they have made the ring at the front of the lens (by the manual focus grip) gold, too? Leaving it silver looks a bit naff. If someone’s going to introduce a ‘special’ edition SLR kit, they should at least make some effort to make it look special.
