For MX format, the sensor is a square, It is foolish to have a vertical grip!

more likely to be a prototype of a D3X.
the picture just say much since you don't know the scale of each individual camera (or rather you know the scale differs between them) so it might even be a D400, with higher spec, bigger prism than the D300 etc. etc. etc.

New Nikon ad from Japan (updated)

Update: the ad says "Big" in Japanese. My first D700 picture was... weird and I updated it. I will create a different post for that story. Is it just me again, or this mount looks to big? Can anyone translate the text?My observation is that the red grip and the mount are different from the current full frame Nikon D700 and D3 models:What say you?Sponsor:Up to $90 Back on Tamron Lenses ...

The missing DOF/Custom Function button is a clue...that this design is probably ancient. The last pro camera from Nikon with only one button was the D1 series. And if you look at the lines on the prism it resembles the F6 prism. And the lines around the lens mount resemble the F6. I say old prototype.(2)

If this is not an old prototype (it could almost be a radical early F5 prototype, with that big prism - since the F5's was removable, it was also big to make room for the finder mount), we've learned two things. First, it uses a 3:2 sensor (that's no square under there, nor even a 4:3 MF-type sensor!), and second, it's a conventional SLR, rather than a radical electronic rangefinder. Both of these things would seem unlikely to change this late in the design process (if they're really planning to release this in March), so if this IS the MX, we're looking at a very similar concept to the Leica S2...

Well, this image at least does not give rise to an all new lens mount; it still has the traditional focus screw. Really hope they'd drop that in an "all new" mount and go directly for all AF-S focussing.

Also keep in mind that the lens mount diameter itself is not a limit for the format/imaging circle of a lens. I.e. a Schneider 4.5/80XL has a 43mm mount size (smaller than Nikon F) and an image circle covering 5x7" (that's large format, not even medium).

You don't think they'll still be using the FX lens mount for a larger sensor do you? I fully expect a new mount and lens line with a sensor size in between FX and traditional MF.

Anyway, it looks a lot like the Leica S2.

Left image has been on the Giugiaro site for a long time already, from way before the D3 introduction.

The prism appears to be larger because it starts way closer to the lens mount than on a D3 (and would probably mean incompatibility with the new TS-lenses). The top of the D3 body (where the top-display sits) is higher measured from lens mount than "the prototype". Superimposing the pictures (matched to scale by the mount) shows that the D3 actually has a larger/higher prism.

The missing DOF/Custom function button (D3 has two buttons) is also a hint to the time this prototype was drawn.
