More? (updated)

Call me crazy, but I think there will be more (personal opinion). Nikon has not updated their lens catalog yet. Usually they do this at the time of the announcement - this is why their web sites go down at midnight (US eastern time) every time when there is a new product.
Nikon USA, I know you are reading this - you have few mistakes on the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G site. Email me if you cannot find them.

It is funny that Nikon used a different 50mm 1:1.4 lens image on their Photokina site.

I will also change my opinion about Nikon reps!

Update: Leica pulled another rabbit out of their hat: DSLR like camera with 37 megapixels and 30x45mm sensor (maybe Otoji was a Leica rumor). They just announced a bunch of new products last week, so multiple announcements are not impossible. Check LeicaRumors.com for more.

I agree with you, Nikon is starting to reach a point where they realize that they are going to have to update their prime lineup. The days of 4 lenses per year are over, Nikon’s gotta start cranking ‘em out.

Indeed. With so many announcements from rivals, Nikon would be foolish to believe that one single lens release would suffice for Photokina 2008.

I don’t think any more are coming – the nikonusa website has a press release claiming the 50mm 1.4 G has been released to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Nikkor optical excellence. Sounds like it’s all we’re getting.

Wow. U think that they can specify, develop and produce a new lens within days? Well…

Personally I hope for a new 85/1.4 to push down the price for used AF-D types ;)

Yeah, one lens would make for a crappy anniversary. 75 years? we should be getting a whole slew of new primes…

And, yeah, you would think they might actually mention the “S” in their new “AFS-S” lens somewhere on the web site.

you’re going to judge based on one lens? you forgot nikon released these lenses this year…
    -60mm f/2.8G AF-S micro-nikkor ((replaces the old one))
    -24mm f/3.5D PC-E
    -45mm f/2.8D PC-E
    -85mm f/4.5D PC-E ((replaces the old one))
    -18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX
    then…
    -50mm f/1.4G AF-S ((replaces the old one))

are you saying these aren’t enough for you?

nope… no nano, no ED, no IF ((internal focusing)), no rubber sealing, nothing… just AF-S’d and G’d version of the old 50mm 1.4D AF

    50mm f1.2 comming?
Maybe Nikon did not put nano coating and rubber saeling on the 50mm f1.4 model because they want to differentiate it from the 50mm f1.2 waiting in the pipeline?? :-) That would indicate a new “cheap” line and a new pro line of primes. That idea is sweet music in my ears…. :-) I see not other reasons why they would not add these two technologies… Otherwise the new primes might be more cost optimised than I hoped for :-(
In any case it seems like the flood of primes has started :-) Hopefully followed by new 24mm, 35mm 85mm, 105mm and 135mm updates. I’m a bit puzzled that they haven’t updated the 200 micro first though, but maybe the design is difficult.

From the MTF charts it seems that Nikon’s 50mm 1.4 might not be as sharp as Sigma’s especially towards the edges. Having said that it seems like a cheap upgrade and it really seems that Nikonians will get 50mm 1.2G pretty soon.

I just want a 50mm f/1.0 …that would blow Canon away ..throw in a 24mm f/1.4 and a 35mm f/1.4 ..ok while were there an 85mm f/1.2 that focuses a little quicker than the 1.4 we have now .. leave the 135mm f/2.0 DC alone as it is perfect ……

I hope and think we will see one of them tomorrow..most likely the 24mm f/1.4 or the 35mm f/1.4 but until tomorrow I will dream its a 50mm F/1.0

it has been a stampede of pre-Photokina announcments from other vendors too.

Seem many were waiting until last moment..

I guess new announcments regarding Nikon DSLRs will be in some months (hopefully few; if not, then in February :( )

What worries me is WHAT feature is planning Nikon to add in new DX-Dxxx and FX-Dxxx and WHEN they are going to release them…

I Really do not think they will wait the “classic” period of time for new models. (they shouldn’t)

The competition has released new DSLRs that can beat many Nikons in Price and Features, and some of them are important. (I use and love Nikon, but don’t blind myself)

    Today is not like yesterday.
Time between new models get shorter… (as it happen with almost any Digital device)

That’s clearly not true. The new 50 has a different number of elements (and a new aperture diaphragm) so it isn’t the same optical design.

why so much discussion about the new 50 1.4 ?

Nikon stated that this new 50 prime is a new designed one, with different elements groups, rounded blades, IF, and the lenght doesn’t change when focusing either..

    Visit the Nikon Press page.

    I didn’t like the high price indeed…
For that price it is supposed to be a 50mm Prime of Primes ! :)

  39. Pablov
    Posted September 21, 2008 at 6:34 pm | Permalink

and of course, it doesn’t have aperture ring either (wich I like for manual movie mode, if ever applicable)

  40. Ernst
    Posted September 21, 2008 at 11:22 pm | Permalink

Why is everybody concluding there’s no rubber seal? As far as I can tell, this claim was originated by the same clown who says the new 50 has the same optical design as the old 50 (the extra element proves that’s not so) and who would have us believe that his “brother” has been using the new 50 for a while.

If you look at the Nikon’s PR picture of the 50 AF-S, it appears to have the rubber seal right there at the base of the lens. It’s lowermost, untextured ring.
