Today’s recap (updated)

No announcement today. Last chance on Monday before Photokina. Besides the earlier hoax, those are the rumors for today:
  • Photoextract (a photo sharing site) has Nikon D800 listed on its camera list.

  • Source reported that Nikon D60 Black Gold could be a Ritz-only package and not a Nikon sponsored campaign.
  • Someone is claiming that a Nikon D3x service handbook exists: “By the way, I’m sure I saw a service handbook for Nikon D3x at Nikon’s service facility today, next week we’ll see if all rumors are correct.” (Source)
  • Cnet is speculating that Photokina will bring us a new D40 and D3x (keyword is speculating).
  • WPPI has updated their website with the BIG ad. No additional information so far. The event is sponsored by Nikon (and others):

I don’t think they will announce something during the show - they may not get enough attention from the press. Who knows.

there was never a similar report about hotpixels and bugs with service software. or anything similar about d700

    i don’t think that’s a true story. or about d3x service handbook.

it’s a typical post after 5dmk2 was released to cause some talking about bad quality of d700. that’s all. canon’s marketing at work

I suppose the “Big” thing is only related to medium format and not DSLRs…

    I would like DSLR news…

I wonder (also) why there is not any Good (Pro / f2.8) zoom lens within the 24-120 (or so) range … ?
Is it so difficult to make?
    Would be a Best-Seller…!!

Canon has one (24-105mm f/4L IS USM), not superb but at least have the choice
(I wouldn’t call the Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 IF-ED AF-S VR as a choice.. because its too poor Image Quality. I don’t understand why Nikon didn’t make a “Pro” version to offer with D700, etc.)

This “BIG!”-writing gets really annoying! Reading thourgh that ad it started p#ss#ng me off after the fourth time. If it is NOT the holy grail they’ll be unveiling I’d be disappointed.

    yes, 24-70 f2.8 is Good !, but I was talking about the range: 24(or 28)-105(or 120)mm

In that range there is no good option.
Even from 3rd party. That’s why I don’t understand if it is so difficult to make or what, because a Good zoom 24-105 f4 (or 2.8) would be Very useful for Lot of Professionals (lot of photojournalist, for instance, weedings, portraits, also amateurs, etc), and thus it would be a best-seller without a doubt

That is a Very common and useful range!!
Today you have to switch lenses from 24-70 to 70-200 to cover 24(or 28) to 105(or 120)…

For several photographers that means more weight to carry, much more money to invest on such high expensive 2 pro zooms, more missed pictures, more dust in the sensor, more risks of damage when changing lenses in the middle of action, etc…

The 24-105 L is not a pro class lens ..
First it is F/4.0 and should be F/2.8
Second it is very weak and soft on the corners with FX ( 5D and 1 Series ).
An equivalent 24-105 f/4 from nikon would be a good holiday zoom for the D300 but not a pro class lens. The 14-24 and 24-70 are superb on the D3/700 but the 70-200 is weak at the corners.. this is what should be replaced with a true pro class lens that works fully on an FX unit.
If you want F/2.8 you have to accept the limitation of price and size will not allow a 24-105 version ( take the sigma 200-500 f2.8 as an example - it is hardly what you would call portable )

    what you say is true.

But even though a 24/28-105mm would be more than useful, and would cover the range several photographers daily use without having to switch lenses, etc.
    Even if it’s f4 instead of f2.8

BIG are the words and ads, but not the facts. I hate this style. Look to LEICA, they came out with a medium format SLR. Let´s see what prices they want for it. From Nikon - nothing … except a 50 mm lens. I don`t understand their marketing and product policy. Canon´s D5 Mk II shows the way (probably it has not the build quality of the Nikons I presume). We hear rumors and rumors …

price will be between 10000 and 20000 Euros - http://www.leicarumors.com/

I think Nikon can do it cheaper.

I’m not saying that it’s NOT a new camera system, but consider how large an undertaking this would be for Nikon. New viewfinders, lenses, camera body (or bodies), developing a new lens mount…the list goes on. I’m not old enough to remember when the Nikon F came out, but I have a feeling that if the internet existed back then *someone* would have leaked it out, and given the nature of our hobby, leaked it with photos.
