Wow, some one bothered to let Dan at maxmax.com to remove the AA filter from his D3, and found the gain of sharpness is only minimal:

this means the D3/D700 "look" is not from a strong AA filter, so it actually support the rumor that they actually have the Sony's 24MP sensor in them and the 12MP out put are from some smart convolution of the pixels -- Nikon did such binning game before but this is far more likely than the D1x scheme.

I LOVE this rumor. It’s like a thriller with a twist — you know something’s coming, but what could it be?… And then WHAM! Bruce Willis was dead all along; the injured cop is really Hannibal Lecter; the call is coming from INSIDE the house.

We’re all looking around for a D3X and it turns out we’ve owned them for a year!

Of course, it’s not true, but that’s beside the point.

Also remembered Nikon had never made it clear what exactly does the "double micro lens" design mean.

"A senior Nikon spokesman went as far to indicate that Nikon were using gap-less, double micro lens technology on the Nikon D3."

I don't believe it's completely impossible to have a surprise inside the D3/D700, that would give sense to the firmware's coding of 24MP

(many people should learn to be more cautious before speaking or laughing about others. To criticize is always easier..)

The question is (assuming the sensor is more than just 12MP) if it could be possible to switch between 12 and 24MP of resolution with only a firmware update, and if that switch keeps the actual 12MP signal-to-noise ratio (when shooting 12MP images) or it would simply lower the resolution with 24MP's noise levels.

- Whould be impressive to have the ability to shoot a 12MP image with 12MP-like noise level, and the option to shoot 24MP images (with its respective higher noise level), both toghether in the same camera, at the choice of the photographer...

Why all the criticism re: the admin? This is a rumor site. A rumor is something which isn't 100%. Some are more likely, some less. If the admin said this one was a sure thing, then I could understand the negative comments.

I too maintain a rumor site. Mine is a new site, and I won't use this space to promote it. I will mention, though, that I recently Publish an anonymous tip that is looking like it was B.S. So it goes.

If you don't like rumors, then don't go to a rumor site!

Remember Nikon did exactly this binding down the actual sensor resolution for low noise game before with the D1 series:

I think this is wishful thinking. when the 3G iphone was about to come out, there were a lot of rumors going around that the exiting 2G phones would be firmware upgradeable to 3G...

These companies want you to keep buying their products.

Seems unlikely.

1. Check out 16-9.net and see how wonderfully the recent Nikon lenses perform on the 21.1MP 1DsIII sensor. Nothing is mussy all to the corners.

2. The DX crop of a 24.4MP FX sensor is 24.4/(1.5*1.5)=10.84MP not 12MP. High school math?

3. Some one please pointing your microscope to an open D3/D700 sensor to checkout the microlens configuration and density to give us the definitive answer?

Downsize the A900 RAW file (with the ACR candidate Adobe released yesterday) to the 12.1MP D3 file size you will see the noise performance is identical if not better. See posts in the dpreview Sony SLR forum.
