You've inadvertently nailed the problem on the head.

If Nikon enters into an exclusive deal with Microsoft, then discussing (Nikon) cameras IS discussing computers, like it or not.

Imagine if the D4 requires some DCMA-protected codec that's only available for Windows. Then every criticism of Windows is also a criticism of the D4, because Nikon hitched their wagon to Microsoft. The two become inseparable.

That's what's wrong with proprietary interfaces, and why if we ever want to get back to discussing cameras, this kind of nonsense needs to be opposed.

Well, we are arguing subjective points. I think the Mac OS sucks WAY more than Windows – go figure. And I was never defending Nikon’s [rumored] decision to deny Mac users (not that I think they ever will)…

Good for you. Nonetheless, Windows is 100% proprietary. It's Microsoft's PROPERTY, and you are NOT free to do with it whatever you like.

If you want to debate which of these two proprietary platforms is more embracing of open file formats, the nod would go to Apple. By a country mile. But Linux and FreeBSD are of course far better in that respect.

You're measuring "performance" in terms of clock rates, megaflops, drive capacity, triangles/sec, etc. This isn't what computers are for, any more than cameras are about megapixels.

Apple customers pay extra for the Apple user experience, which is the only aspect of "performance" that actually matters.

You could say the same thing about Nikon versus Canon. You could also use the same argument in defense of supporting the Mac only.

The reason I care is because I like Nikon's (hardware) products but I don't want to be locked-in to using Microsoft's miserable, proprietary OS on the back-end, and for no photographic reason whatsoever.

Imagine if Nikon's film SLRs only worked with one brand of film, because the two cut a deal? That would suck. Now imagine if the government got involved and enforced that vendor lock-in (through the USPTO, the DMCA, etc.). That would totally suck.

This is my other problem with Macs. I built a $600 PC from a barebones kit that can mop the floor with a multi thousand dollar Mac in terms of performance. Lastly, there are those Mac commercials – yuck.
Anyway, whatever floats your boat. I like PC’s others like Mac – nobody can tell our photos apart so who cares?

If by “PC” you mean “Windows,” that’s every bit as proprietary.

I hate Apple. Proprietary crap drives me crazy. I don’t want to start a PC/Apple battle here as I don’t care what people use but, even though I assume your comment was meant as a joke, many more folks than not work on a pc – even for creative apps.
