Otoji spy shot (updated)

I got this image as a follow up to this story which was based on the “Big” post. This is suppose to be a cell phone spy shot related to Otoji, but I do not know yet what does it say:
Comments, translations, interpretations are welcome. This could be HUGE! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.
Translation:
M1 Development Plan

device FX format
device DX format

how to save Food expenses
how many time go to store
etc.

The only relevant info is “MX Format”, which one could figure out without any Japanese knowledge. Would it mean medium format?

    I’d rather see a rangefinder myself. :)

The implications of this image are pretty clear to me: Nikon is planning to introduce a third image format, named MX, which will complement FX and DX. MX will be 54×54 mm, almost as big as Hasselblad negatives.

Here’s my reasoning. The image shows FX as 4256×2832 and MX as 6380×6380. Take 36mm, divide by 4256, and multiply by 6380, and you get 53.96.

I’m guessing that the “hsx” means high-speed mode.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that MX is something pretty awesome. Is this the ‘BIG’ thing that Nikon has been spewing about? Wouldn’t it make sense for portrait photographers to have a medium-format camera? Better start saving your coin, boys…

+1 Yoyonel: Looks like a new format, medium format-like, with the options to have (from top to bottom): 40,7Mp 27,2Mp or 18,1Mp.

The FX possibilites are the already known 12,1Mp, 10,1Mp or 8Mp.

Besides that, we need some japanese skills

the katakana (letters) after MX, FX and DX read “foomatto”, i.e. “format”, thats what my modest japanese skills allow me to read. and yes, looks like the new baby is called “M1″, following the tradition of F1 and D1.

I just noticed,… maybe instead of different resolutions, maybe this is a table of removable backs or other exchangable sensor options for the new cam… because the current FX cams don’t let you chose square resolutions… figure this: old lenses + FX back, new lenses (M-Gs??) + MX back…

Wouldn’t it be safe for Nikon to produce just the back that is compatible with Mamiya, Contax and Hassiblad systems, rather than inventing and investing a totally new system?

No wonder Pentax culled their digital 645 attempt.

This just doesn’t make sense. Nikon would have to change mount, redesign all lenses, etc. And build a mosnter body, which no Nikon shooter except maybe those who also have Hassys would be interested.

    Forget it, just a prank.

Now: a modular FX makes sense, accepting both 12MP and 24MP sensor units, which you could change yourself. One in D3 size and other in D700 size, fps and buffer load would change accordingly when sensor module plugs in. Would save money for Nikon to have 4 different possiblities in FX, just 2 assembly lines.

Why would they have to change the mount?
Why wouldn’t they just make lenses with larger image circles to cover the larger format this way the new lenses would be compatible with FX and DX (just change the backs on the camera or put them on a FX or DX body). Nikon can design lenses with large image circles (look at the tilt-shift lenses) I think that if such a camera did exist they would keep the lens mount the same but the lenses for it would be larger than the average Nikkor, around the same size as the tilt shifts or lenses like the 105VR and pricy like the tilt-shifts.

    M1 Development Plan

It could also be a humorous addition, an internal joke within Nikon as any medium format camera will be crazy expensive in the $25,000 range minimum. The Japanese do have a sense of humor.
I’ll probably never have one myself but I do have customers who would buy one (then with the commission I may eventually be able to afford one).

For a larger larger image circle wouldn’t they just have to move the lens further away from the film plane?

I mean think of it, it’s basically a funnel of light emitted out the back of our lenses, so the further away the film, or in this case sensor plane is, the larger the patch of light would be.

Ever looked inside of a Hassy? The last element in the lens is quite a bit away from the shutter.

Most of the lenses already have enough resolving power that, in my mildly knowledgeable mind, they should work just fine.

Dang, this would be exciting! Makes me wish that I had a house to mortgage!

Peter, simply moving a lens away from the film plane to accomodate a bigger mirror box won’t work with any of the F-mount lenses (if that is what is being suggested) as you would lose infinity fcus. A bit like adding an extension tube, mackes your lens more Macro then MX…

Whoknows is absolutely correct, the easiest thing to do is design a lens with greater coverage. I take back my size comment before as many medium format lenses can be quite compact (thinking back to my old Bronica 645 RF I had my Pentax 67 lenses, Nikkor tilt shift and my friends hassy lenses in mind when I wrote that. Nikon does have allot of experience with lenses that produce a larger image circle LF, MF (for bronica) and the tilt-shifts if any company can design a lens with a larger image circle for the existing F mount to go MF it is Nikon.

It would also have to accommodate a rather large mirror mechanism (unless its a RF).
Come to think of it how would the mirror mechanism work on such a beast so that F-mount would still work?
The mirror would have to move differently than a mirror in an FX camera. There would be no room for it to go up and down in a normal fashion unless they went to a new lens mount or a rangefinder camera.
    hmmm

    Posted September 1, 2008 at 2:15 pm | Permalink

Why not a double mirror, divided in the middle half going up and half going down. That would leave a thin line in the viewfinder when composing but I could live with that.
Maybe it could slide backwards and up before swinging up out of the way. Such a system would be slow but the camera would already be slow by virtue of the larger file sizes.
Maybe they would go with a pellical mirror (Nikon F3 highspeed, Canon EOS 1n rs) that doesn’t move at all (and protects the sensor from dust at the same time).
Maybe they would go to an electronic viewfinder and forget the mirror altogether.
This is all just fun speculation, I’m a dreamer at heart and if anyone else has some logical ways that Nikon could keep the F-mount in a MF system I’m all ears.

A double mirror won’t solve it, it is about the space the mirror needs. The mirros is at a 45 degree angle to reflect the light into the pentaprism. Just to illustrate, take the lens of your (d)slr and look at the mirror. Now imagine it being as long as it is wide and see how much more space it would need. To give it enough space and to make sure it doesn’t touch the lens, you’ll need to move the mount fuurther away. Hassy’s are so big and empty inside because they need to accommodate a big mirror at a 45deg angle. Folding in two, swingin makes no difference.

    Your absolutely correct.
I just did the math (man my trig is rusty) and the mount would have to be moved.
No reason not to have an F-mount though, FX and DX lenses would not be able to focus on infinity but would still have close up applications. Plus the MX lenses would easily scale backwards onto FX and DX.
Lets look at this from the other direction too. Why not (assuming interchangeable backs) have sensors that are deeper inside the camera (FX and DX not MX) depending on which format you wish to shoot in. The backs would have to have an incorporated shutter unit (not likely though there would have to be some sort of cover, automatic or otherwise to protect the sensor during swaps) or the shutter would have to be situated deeper into the body, allowing the smaller sensors to be positioned closer.
Why not forget the focal plane shutter altogether and go with flashing the sensor for FX and DX and a leaf shutter in the lenses (that lock open on FX and DX)
This would give pros access to very high sync speeds with studio flash and allow quite a bit of room inside the back end of the mirror box when an FX or DX back is attached.
More than likely it will turn out to be (if it’s real at all) a strait up MF body with new lenses (still using an F-mount for backwards capability) with a fixed sensor that has crop modes for higher speed shooting and cropping in camera to narrow a lenses recorded angle of view (crop factor).
    I do ramble on don’t I.

    Right page column’s address(@Japanese)
    http://doraku.asahi.com/money/chie/080616.html

This column is totally unrelated to the camera.
Why will an article about Nikon be next to this column?

And the left page is not written by Japanese grammar.

BAD:”Soshi MX format” (Shoshi is first two word Japanese KANJI, and it means sensor.)

    Right:”MX format Shoshi”

    PS

In the case of this article, it will be usually written as “sensor” not as “Shoshi”.

Sensor is “Sensa” in Japanese Katakana.

So, best grammer is “MX fo-matto sensa”

I’ve been diggin around in the ‘Japanese’ a bit too (although my language skills are zero at best^^)
Tried some english>japanese dictionary sites, tried translations for ’sensor etc., but too confusing and better left to native speakers who will hopefully kindly help out here.
What I DID find was a reference to ‘Otoji’, althoug spelled as ‘otooji’ on this page, despite someone earlier claiming the word did not exist.
Differecne here, it claims to be ‘parents younger brother - uncle’, so not older and bigger but newer?
    http://rut.org/cgi-bin/j-e/dosearch?sDict=on&H=PS&L=E&T=uncle&WC=none&FG=r&BG=b&S=26
This is gettingmore confusing by the minute and my nails are getting shorter…

Forgot to add, 2nd from the bottom on this page. However, not been able to find it on other sites, maybe not a very common expression? I also noticed ‘Otoji’ appears to be a common surname according to google, so maybe the reference is toa person? Can anyone find out if a person called otoji works at the Sendai plant and if so what his job function is? And this site sems to have spoiled search results in google for ‘otoji’ just a tad :P

in Japanese,Otoji(sounds Ootoji)大刀自means empress or vice empress.
On the other hand, sounds Otooji is 弟小父, means parent’s younger brother.
but both words are rarely used in Japan.

If it is real, the possibilities are interesting. A smallish medium format square sensor - 36 by 36. Offering upwards of 39 Megs. With the sensor being this size, it means that it will be able to work in F mount body and use your existing lenses. No need for vertical grip or L brackets - though maybe a bit of getting used to in terms of framing and composition after years of look at a 2 by 3 box.

Nikon MX format camera will use new viewing system not like another, is not 45 degree angle mirror! Many Nikkor can cover MX format, but new lens needs especially for normal picture, wide angle, and, shift picture. Also MX format allow vertical or horizon picture in FX size without turning the camera!

    Wrap up of today’s rumors

Very busy day today. This is what happened in a nutshell (thanks to all readers that emailed us):I am still getting reports that there was a Nikon press conference in France on Sept 3rd. Anyone?”Nikon UK is pleased to announce the versatile Zoom-Nikkor AF-S DX VRIII IF-ED 18-165mm f/3.5-8G” - what is this all about? VRIII? Nikon D800 is being actively discussed all over the place. Most of the info is old.A rumor came from Germany that the next D3s will be called D4 (the Germans are always right). Could this be the reason why the French web site changed …

Looking at that image it is obviously the same publication, not two pages open on one computer. But here’s the thing that gets me, the publisher Asahi has that health and living magazine but they also have a veritable bajillion other magazines. One of which is this http://digimaga.ocn.ne.jp/magazine/100002.html. What seems to be a very popular photography magazine exhibiting the latest in camera gear. I didn’t find that article in there but I think there’s a good chance that they also have a magazine with mixed interests and what we are looking at is a screenshot from someone’s computer, most likely of the layout software with some pre-press information. There’s no reason for me to believe this is fake.
