Looks like a rather small body to me, no? The 18-55 DX VR isn’t a huge lens, but the body looks quite small even with this lens attached (and I would guess the 18-105 VR is about the same size as the 18-135 DX).

See if you can find out a ship date!
As always, THANKS!
[Reply]
Any definitive news on a UK price?
[Reply]
WOOHOO
I see the grill, so let’s still hope for a video mode, but I see no dedicated button.
[Reply]
Looks real to me. Nice refinements over d80. Should be a good deal for peeps with more than D60 desires, and savy enough not to go for D300
[Reply]
yipee…can you give us the spec?
[Reply]
Looks like Target thinks it’s a 12.3 megapixel camera. Unfortunately, they’re page for it doesn’t give pricing info yet (thanks to Google for helping find it!)

[Reply]
Isn’t that a video clip icon just over the OK pad?
[Reply]
YEAH!!! AF cervo!
top lcd; both front and real dial; HUGE 3″ LCD.. all really nice!
looks very good. now, just wait 2 days until official specs.
[Reply]
Looks good. More info please
[Reply]
Yeah, lets hope that it’s a 1mpix LCD
[Reply]
Can anyone make out what icons are on the buttons above and below the directional pad?
[Reply]
No LiveView?
[Reply]
Specs are there, it is the D300 screen and probably the same sensor too!
[Reply]
Rather LiveView…
[Reply]
No, that’s LiveView button (it says: Lv)
[Reply]
video recording, with “real movie-like” quality
why is it quoted? what is real movie-like? any specs on resolution, fps, codec?
[Reply]
Looks interesting. Where did these come from I wonder?
[Reply]
It can record videos with rear LCD used as viewfinder - it’s bound to have LV too
[Reply]
Any chance it’ll use the same grip as the D300?
[Reply]
Is LiveView supporting the DoF preview? Maybe movies will be recorded at default aperture?
[Reply]
Fake. . . Just kidding
This will be the perfect camera to give my wife, so I can buy a D700
[Reply]
This is too cool! All we need now is the official release date, and we will be set
[Reply]
What’s the lowest button on the right of the LCD, any ideas? It wasnt there on the D80, or rather, the D80 has the OK button in this place, which moved to the centre of the jog-dial.
Could this be a video-button?
[Reply]
I would guess that the Video Mode would be an option on the top dial.
[Reply]
indeed, all i currently need is a AF cervo and higher resolution, all the other stuff are relevant for my uses. people say that wait for new tech stuff is a dumbness. but my good old D40 is hanging on nicely, so i could choose not to get a D80 and wait for the (by the time, only a rumored) D90.. i’m starting to see that being pacient was a good thing.
[Reply]
aren’t there any hi-res pics?
[Reply]
Source?
[Reply]
Just like the D80, great looks, best ergo among cameras in the price range.
The back is also same, just with larger LCD and now the OK button in the 4-way dial, all nice buttons on left.
It’ll be very successful, Nikon is doing well these days.
[Reply]
Any chance that this D90 does NOT use SD cards???
Maybe they decided to go back to CF for speed: 12 mpx + 4.5 fps = a LOT of data transfer…
Loa
[Reply]
Will there be something like the MB-D80?
[Reply]
SDs got faster too. Look at the pics and you’ll see a card-door like on the D80.
[Reply]
Any guess on body only pricing? Maybe $900-1000?
[Reply]
I posted one of these pictures in Fredmiranda long time ago… haha
[Reply]
Anyone know what the D90 will use: SD or CF?
[Reply]
This is a dream camera! Only if it could produce 6Mp NEF. Maybe its nice to have room for cropping, but I’d prefer less noise and faster workflow. Damn megapixel rat race.
[Reply]
Well, we got them all plus the specs - the specs are exclusive for NR.
[Reply]
If the display is a 3″ it is about the same size as the 80. If not bigger judging from this picture:
http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/slr/d80/img/pic_001_l.jpg
[Reply]
Everything looks good on this camera, except I’d love not to see the 420 pixel RGB-Sensor that gives me pain on my D80’s exposures.
Hope the video mode is usable (focus, exposure, resolution, sensitivity); would save me quite some euro from the video cam-budget to capture my kiddies movements and sounds. Dream to allow for real wide angle video (unlike the consumer-video cams that go no wider than eq. 50mm*0.6). A film camera with such big pixels (5.6micron if I’m not mistaken) and 1.4-Optics is a dream come true!
Thanks Nikon, thanks Nikonrumor!
[Reply]
The door is definitly SD as on the D80.
I did not SD when I came from D70 to D80, but as many laptops take it without further hardware and it’s less fragile (had an expensive repair on my D70 when a CF-pin in the camera got bent), it’s OK.
Furthermore: SD becomes kind of standard on the video cameras so will stay available huge (16GB and 32GB!) and for long.
[Reply]
While the D90 looks great, any idea if additional lenses will be announced on the 27th?
[Reply]
I think it will more likely be the “Info” button.
[Reply]
with this new D90 coming out, is the price for the D80 going to drop??? should i wait to buy the D80… or what should i do?
[Reply]
I would surely buy a d90 instead of d80.
It’s a quantum leap!
[Reply]
Anyone know if it will have a mirror lock-up mode. So far that’s all thats been really missed in the Dxx series from Nikon. Impossible to take astronomy pics
[Reply]
They must have got the focus in live view faster to keep up during video recording, but what about the focusing noise? :/ I’m a bit sceptic now
[Reply]
I can’t believe that they are using the Matrix metering from the D80. To me, that is THE biggest thing wrong with the D80. It seems like now it will be the biggest thing wrong with the d90 too. That was the ONE thing I was really hoping they were going to fix and probably the one thing that would make the biggest improvement in IQ. I hope they’ve tweaked it somehow.
[Reply]
Saw that too. Now I’ll have to wait for reviews instead of ordering on the first day just because of that incertitude. Anyway I guess I’ll have to see if the new lens is any good too.
[Reply]
i would like to buy the D90 instead of the D80 but i think the price is a little bit too high for my first dslr. i hope prices get lower on the d80
[Reply]
Actually, having the meter of the D80 isn’t an overall bad thing. What will be annoying is if the metering is implemented like in the D80, ie, there’s a tendency to focus on the central area of the viewfinder even when in matrix meter mode. Presence of a specific matrix meter and implementation of that matrix meter are two separate things.
[Reply]
D80 has mirror lock-up mode bud Nikon calls it “Exp. delay mode” - who knows why
D90 probably will it has too. I hope…
[Reply]
In the last photo it looks similar to the 18-55mm. Does that mean it’ll pop out when it’s focusing? If so, bah humbug, perhaps I’ll just get the body then.
[Reply]
that’s maybe because it’s with the 18-55
look at the focus and zoom ring, it looks nothing like on the first 5
[Reply]
Well, if it’s the first one then the d80 is the right choice!! Just wait another month then, when d90 would be available.
[Reply]
it is 12mp. Well that’s what it says up top.
[Reply]
The lens on the las picture is de 18-55mm? Looks different to me…
Congratulations Nikon Rumours for the great work !
[Reply]
I’m coming from a D70; will this really matter to me? I mean…I’m sick of the exposures I’m getting from the 70, especially indoor, yet a D40 I borrowed for a few weeks rendered outstanding results.
[Reply]
That would be nice, but I bet you it will use the same grip as the D80 used.
[Reply]
Holy &*%#. FACE DETECTION!!!! I was ok with video, but face detection…?!?!?!!
btw, DPreview says the 3″ on the D300 is 922,000 pixels, the D90 is 900,000 dots. Are they different or the D90’s number just rounded?
Looks all nice never the less
[Reply]
It’s SD card. I bet in the next couple years SD cards will take over and CF will die. SD cards are getting faster and are up to 32gb.
CF, SD I could care less. They both store photo’s.
[Reply]
The lens in the top photo looks different from the one in the bottom photo. The one in the bottom seems to same pop up barrel thing when you focus as the 18-55mm. Except in that photo, it has a VR switch.
[Reply]
That’s a relief. I hope they adjust it to avoid the over exposure problem of the D80. If the D90 meters better than the D80, I can’t wait to buy one. If it meters the same as the D80, I will consider other brands.
[Reply]
thanks… i’ll be waiting
[Reply]
Does it has an internal GPS?
[Reply]
If this camera truly has a decent video function, I could very well be moving over to Nikon from the Canon camp (unless Canon can come up with something as good this week).
Can anyone wager a guess as to whether a ’stitch-assist’ like function might be available on the D90 since there’s sortof a ‘live’lcd view? I take a fair number of photos for panorama stitching, and it’s that ’stitch’ function (along with the video) that have kept me from moving to dSLRs… until now…
[Reply]
All that’s left for me to be 100% committed to buying the D90 instead of 97% is whether the camera has the same CA-fixing feature that the D300 has.
[Reply]
Uh? Did I miss something? NO sensor cleaning?
[Reply]
Actually, I’m imagining it’ll have an MB-D90 specifically for it; I’m hoping it’ll be a bar-along-the-bottom, like the D300’s MB-D10, and not the L-shaped ugliness that the D200 and D80 had before it.
If it’s MB-D10 style, that would be interesting.
[Reply]
Where is the line and who do I give my credit card to?
[Reply]
is the sensor CD or CMOS? any clues
[Reply]
I’m also worried about the metering…
What about the video-mode now? 1080?
[Reply]
Likely it’s the same one as the D300, Meaning it will be a 12.3mp DX (croppped frame) CMOS with sensor cleaning.
Think of it this way: D300 is to D90 what D200 was to D80 and D3 is to D700
[Reply]
Sensor cleaning? - jeez, marketeers came up with that need… not photographers… does it have a focus motor in the body? Or does it require AFS lenses?
[Reply]
In the lens specs it says ‘Hybrid Aspherical’ ?? Whats that
[Reply]
Are you kidding? Have you ever used a DSLR and actually change the lenses? If so, you’d understand the need for built-in sensor cleaning.
[Reply]
Agreed. The missing sensor cleaning, which would actually be useful for those interested in taking quality PHOTOGRAPHS, was obviously ditched for the gimmicky video capture. Given that most “prosumers” -as they are called- never even remove the kit lens, they don’t need it. Those of us actually interested in the IMAGE, need to shell out the bucks for the D300. Too bad.
[Reply]
I am working on getting a confirmation on the sensor cleaning. It’s SHOULD have one - however I cannot confirm it yet.
[Reply]
That would be a huge relief!!
[Reply]
Why ’savy enough not to go for the D300′? What’s wrong with the D300 as a choice? Too expensive? Wrong feature set?
Curious minds want to know.
[Reply]
You guys get it that “Sensor Cleaning” doesn’t actual clean the sensor right? It shakes off some of the dust which falls into the inside of the camera body. If you always shoot landscape and hold your camera still when traveling - great. Grime from vapors? No weather sealing and that is what you care about. Don’t confuse marketing gimmicks with picture quality.
[Reply]
http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nikond90comparewo3.jpg
These are the same lenses, are they not?
[Reply]
sensor cleaning is a gimmick to give it a cool factor. it’s never worked in my cameras. dust is still there.
[Reply]
Yes, they are - this confirms that our first D90 picture was real.
[Reply]
sensor cleaning is a joke. whenever I tried it it did nothing. dust was still there. it’s just a dumb gimmick. PS will remove dust.
[Reply]
I hear you. I use PS to remove dust from my pic’s. Most of the crap in the cameras endless menus I never use.

[Reply]
Gooooooooooooood news!!!!! :))))
Can we be sure that this is the D300’s sensor? What about the A/D conversion? 12 or 14?

Hybrid aspherical lenses
This method is used to fabricate hybrid aspherical lenses combining glass and plastic.
UV-curable resin is injected between the spherical glass and the aspherical metal mold, and irradiated with UV to form a glass-resin hybrid aspherical lens.
Nikon has technology for each key factor, including materials, fabrication and measurement.
http://www.nikon.com/about/technology/core/optical_u/aspherical_lenses_e/index.htm
In other words cheap plastic crap
[Reply]
Two more questions: what about the EXPEED, and how many fps??? I think these are more important than cheering on the video mode…
[Reply]
Hi
The D90 has 4 games of bonus… tic tac toe, tetris, pong and arkanoid
un salud0
[Reply]
I’m sure it has the Expeed processor. Well, it’s even in the D60!
[Reply]
OK, that sounds logic. And what do you guys think about the frames-per-second capability?
[Reply]
I wonder why only one person in this blog cares about a feature that helps improving image quality. The CA correction (of D300) in JPGs is the thing why I would buy this Camera. I am much more concerned, if the micro grid is a weak point for moisture getting in the camera. If this is the case, I have to buy Pentax because the D300 is too heavy and expensive for me.
[Reply]
Do you work for Nikon? LOL
[Reply]
Canons new 50D also has face detection.
[Reply]
I think it will have the Expeed processor that does the CA correction (as you can see on the D60 too). It’s the latest processor Nikon have, so if they used on d300 and on d60… it should be on d90 too
[Reply]
Does the D60 really remove CA? :S I don’t think so.
Finally nikon gets to the same level of high iso quality as canon does
And lot of you is worried about the metering system used: did you really have problems with it on the d80? I for one choosing nikon because of the exposure system (including flash exposure), and build quality (feels good in hand). And my friend’s canon 400d misses exposures, and it’s been reported that it does in forums several times. Another thing is the focus on canons. When he was doing portraits, the focus missed ~80% of the time (both back and front focus) under incandescent lighting. What’s the problem with the CAM1000 focusing system?
[Reply]
My bad SteMa, i was thinking about D-Lighting, that D60 have it too. Anyway i hope that D90 will have that CA auto removal.
I like the focus sistem Nikon have (my D50 have). Anyway many users complain about the mettering sistem . I remember Thom Hogan said on dpreview forums that the mettering implementation in the D80 was tweaked to have more shadows details then preserving highligts.
[Reply]
No larger pictures? These are kinda small!
[Reply]
just because a lens is made cheaper and mostly plastic does mean it’s crap. I use the 28-80mm f/3.3-4.5G lens on my D700 and it’s a sharp lens. I like it if I want a nice light set up for the day. I have the 18-55mm VR also and it’s a great one to for my D40 and D300.
damn those security code’s!!!! keep f’ing forgetting to typo them in.
[Reply]
I work for ritzcamera.com we are taking preorders for the nikon d90 with 18-200mm VR lens will be out in 3 weeks, call me directly 949-442-0202 ext 213 or email me at gino@ritzinteractive.com price $1299.95 i will be here till 5pm pacific its not on site yet.
[Reply]
If it uses the same chip as the D300 there will be no noise. I shot some pix of my grandson on my D300 believing that the speed was set to 200 ISO. When I checked the ‘info’ in Photoshop when looking at some full screen images, I discovered I had left it on 2000 ISO from the previous evening. Absolutely no noise anywhere, even in the shadows.

With regards to nikon d90 as i recal it uses SD card and also SDHC. Whats the advantage of using SDHC? Whats the desired write speed of the SD card for this camera? SD cards are cheap. Is it advisable to use an 8 gig SD card????
looking forward for anybody’s reply or comment thanks
[Reply]
SDHC basically means faster access speeds and bigger storage, for the inflated price. The biggest SD standard cards are 8GB while biggest SDHC cards are 32GB and may rise to a maximum of 2TB. If you want the fastest access times possible (e.g. for multiple shots)or bigger space for movies, SDHC has more expandability as the price will definately come down within the next year or two. But its your preference.
You can probably get along quite happily for a few years with the 8GB SD. But id rather go with the high-capacity SDHC cards.
“Egg consolidation* fans will delight at the launch of the World’s first ‘class 6′ 32GB SDHC memory card. Panasonic unveiled a prototype of the capacious card, capable of sustained write speeds of at least 6MB/sec and maximum data speeds of up to 20MB/sec.” - Dpreview

I was going to buy the D80 until Nikon announced the D90. Are there huge advantages (apart from the video recording and the 2MP difference) between those two?
