I think most of the times the Nikon reps do not know much. Ask him/her what will come for PMA.

You guys are going to be waiting along time for your beloved new 70-200 VRII….there isnt a new version coming out until 2010. I own a camera store so I talk to Nikon reps all the time. Not only that, it will retail for $2400.

I recently went to my dealer in Amsterdam. Having recently bought the 14-24 and 24-70mm I explained that I was interested in the 70-200 but had heard about vignetting on FX format.

His advice – performance on FX is sub par, you should wait a few months for the 70-200 replacement which is FX optimised.

In a separate conversation he informed me that he had sold his own 70-200 in anticipation of an announcement at PMO 2009.

I hope he is right.

I just bought a D700 from Jacobs in central london (major nikon dealer) along with the new 14-24 & 24-70 lenses. I also wanted to purchase the 70-200 lens but I was told in the shop not to buy the 70-200 as a new version with nano coating was soon to be released.

So i am now waiting….

Most of the resolution figures are jsut fine, actually I my eyes as good as it gets on today's censors. The center resolution is nothing else but stellar. But there is a significant drop at the long end. It is only at the very border.

As I'm not a professional, it doesn't justify throwing any kind of money at a replacement, there are other things that would complete my gear a lot better.

I really hope that Nikon will start to make a f/4 series, as it would be for serious amateurs and pros, who want to go light. If the filter size for the imaginary 24-120mm would be 77mm, the lens would become a real top seller, in my eyes.

So you are saying the the current 70-200mm VR lens does not take good pic’s on say the D3 or D700? I think it works very well with my D700. I guess Nikon is updating it so they can jack the price up on the lens to make more money. I bet the new very will cost about $2000. I’ll keep the one I have now.

I guess the main reason for the upgrade is the poor performance on full format cameras.
My guess is the the lens will stay pretty much the same, other than the border resolution.

But what would be really nice, is a 24-120mm f/4 VR, but unfortunately, this is not even a rumor, only a dream…

I don’t think the new version of the 70-200 is a rumour. When the D3 came out, I received a brochure from Nikon that stated the new lenses that were coming out along with it. A 14-24, 24-70 and “70-200″. Since then I’ve heard nothing more other than rumours but I suspect it will be out sometime soon.

lol, Sure will be nikkor 70-200mm AF-S IF N VRII f2.8 1:1 macro + VR auto-panning can turn off.. what for a f4 lens?

Hey maybe its an F4 lens? Or zoom-micro? OR both. Imagine that a 70-200 F4 AF-S N VRII 1:1 zoom-micro. I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

We sure hope nikon add some new features or upgrade with the following:

1) Nano Coating
2) VR to VRII
3) Correct vignetting (sure will)
4) Macro 1:1 maybe (1m close focus)
5) lighter and shorter or no change.

I have had the current 70-200 for about 4 years now. About 18 months ago, its AF became sporatic and then died. Nikon fixed a grounding wire problem. Right now it is back at Nikon as AF is starting to go sporatic again (sometimes it works sometimes not, remove from camera and remount ususally helps). So, I will probably sell mine once fixed and consider the new one. If it were to focus closer than the current 1.5 m (5 feet), that would also be a big plus. If I were to move to a FX body, I would also want the new version due to some vignetting(sp?) with current version.
