I think with all of this rumoring we are missing a few points. #1 Nikon is a business and therefor has a business model in place as to when they will release certain bodies and lenses so as not to flood the market causing diminished sales of certain bodies. #2 what is their track record. What cameras would replace other cameras? #3 What are they competing against?

Nikon has a really solid, modular setup with the Expeed processor and a broad range of sensors to choose from. Canon has the 21mpx sensor in their flagship so of course Nikon will want to one-up that as soon as possible with the available 24mpx sony sensor. Then there are gaps that need to be filled (a-la D90). I don't see the D900 being too realistic unless Nikon is looking to decimate Canon. It is possible for Nikon to take the expeed platform and created a scatter-shot of new DSLRs that are so affordable to get into and have so much headroom for pro possibilities that no one would be able to touch them. But, again, this all remains to be seen.

Exactly!

Nikon has to reduce their dependancy on Sony sensors especially in the top class products as Sony bodies become more usable (professional bodies will follow). And sooner or later using the same sensor may become disadvantageous for Nikon, as Sony will spend a lot of PR money entering the professional segment. If Sony´s market share has grown reasonably they will introduce new prime lenses etc. for their professional bodies (as soon as they are available) as well.

Nikon, be prepared!

Even if the Sony 24MP sensor is OK, it's possible that Nikon is working on something else and may want to put it in their D3x for business reasons.

Makes sense! If the 24MP Sony sensor is not that promising, Nikon may prefer to use it in the D800 only. The D3x/D4 may use a Nikon sensor, that may be used in a D900 or whatever some time later. If the manufacturing process for this Nikon sensor has not been optimized, the output will be too low, such that only the D3x/D4 will use it. If the D800 is coming, it will definitely influence those guys that have a look on MPixels. And Canon and Sony play the game of MPixels fairly well.
Nikon has started a spectacular attack (D300, D3, D700) towards Canon and Sony and continuing this strategy will produce a higher market share. This market share will causes customers to buy more new Nikon than Canon/Sony lenses etc. as soon as the sensors outperform the lenses. Many photographers may then only change their camera bodies in longer cycles but not their complete equipment. And this break even point is quite close in 24MP-days!

Yeah, but I meant that someone could've mistaken a small DSLR for a P&S. Never mind, we'll see it when it's done ;)

The D90 and either a D800 or D3x I can see.. but I have trouble seeing both the D3x AND the D800. If we are to assume that this would mirror the D3 / D700 (both 12 MP high speed DSLRs), I would think that the D3x would come out first.. then perhaps a year later, the D800 (matching roughly the pattern of the D3 / D700).. But there is also the 'Thom Hogan' factor to consider.

Thom predicts (and yes, this is admittedly only a prediction), that the D3x will be in the form of a 'D900' instead (be it full sized body a la D3 or more like a D700). If his prediction is true, the D3x title will never see the light of day.. and if so.. does this mean a D800 AND a D900 instead? In any case, I can't see two 24 MP cameras being released by this year's end.

As for the possibility of the modular version.. perhaps.. but it would have to be in a class of its own to have room for two newly launched 24 MP Nikon cameras within such a tight timespan (5 remaining months).

Cheers,

NRG

Again - it could be the digital rangefinder or modular DSLR - or maybe they are the same thing.

The problem is that P&S cameras don't constitute as DSLRs.

My guess is D90, D800 and D3x. Instead of the D800 we could see the mystical modular DSLR or a digital range finder. For the D4 we have to wait a while.

Maybe the APS P&S will be third DSLR? Only in a smaller body and with a one, noninterchangeable lens.

'.. three new Nikon SLRS out before the end of the year inc the D4 near the end of the year.'

I bet this will end up being bogus. For starters, the D3 is just a year old.. so the D4 would realistically be still a good two years away..(and I doubt the D4 is meant to be the 24 MP version either).. and three new drls before the year's end? Sounds to be a bit much.. perhaps two? (a D80 replacement and the d3x ( a.k.a D900?)). Would be interesting to see what the thrid could be.

Cheers,

NRG
