You’re probably right. I guess I was hoping for a 7/1 announcement with availability for like 8/1, which would have just worked for me. That or a 7/1 announcement with immediate or very quick price drops on the D80. Guess I can wait a little longer and see what happens, but it looks like I’ll probably be buying a D80 shortly.

Even if a replacement was announced yesterday, it wouldn’t have been available for purchase within the timeframe you mentioned…
I’d guess it will be announced in slight advance of Photokina and be available around November. I was hoping for a July announcement with a Spetember availability but that’s looking less and less likely.

Yikes! September? Whatever happened to the June 16-30 rumors? Sadly I really want to buy within the next month (ideally 2 weeks), so it looks like I may be one of the unfortunate ones to buy right on the cusp of a new release. On the plus side, I’ve been borrowing a D80 to try out for about a month and am quite happy with it. I was planning on seeing if I could get a D80 even cheaper than current prices once a replacement came out, so it’s not like I would even necessarily jump for the new model anyway. Just would be nice to have the option…. Keep the rumor updates coming!

I, too, was really hoping to hear of a D80 replacement – the D300 is both too large and too expensive for me. Looks like the “D90″ will be announced closer to Photokina which likely makes it a Christmas/Holiday availability. BOO!!!!

This is disappointing. The D700 is nice, but the camera I was really waiting for is the D90. Looks like I have to buy a D80 now, or perhaps ditch Nikon entirely. Hmmmm… Olympus? Pentax?

great news this D700. At last some competition to Canon’s 5D.
The PC-E lenses are great lenses, but personally I would have been happier with the announcement of AF-S primes like a 50mm and 85mm and a FX capable 70-200mm/2.8 or a 35-105mm/2.8
Hopefully Nikon works on these too

If money is the farthest thing from an “issue,” then might as well splurge for the 700. In reality the only thing to take into consideration is if you do enough available/low light shooting to justify and additional $1,300 dollars. I just purchased a D300 as well, however I’m a college student and have trouble justifying the lens purchases I’ve made thus far (70-200mm f/2.8 VR and 35mm f/2.0) and I still need a wide angle. Even if I knew previous to my 300 purchase that the 700 was on its way I think getting quality glass outweighs the “latest and greatest” body. Just my $.02

I too am in the market… would prefer not to spend 1500 – 1700 on a 300. Am upgrading from a 50 and would not want to have to swap out sd memory and I really love my wireless remote shutter release (why Nikon didn’t include this feature on it’s better cameras – one will never know)…

Anyhow, I’m tempted to buy the 300 but want to see what they have in store to replace the 80. I don’t want or need live view or a sensor that cleans off dust – I’d really like all that my current camera has, comander capability for flash, the sensor that the 300 has for higher ISO shots and a sturdier body and 3″ lcd…

So, I must wait a little longer – so be it. A 300 can be had now for 1599.00 from a authorized Nikon dealer, perhaps the 700 may not impact that much more but a 90 perhaps may – or the combination of the two ?

Alright, thus end the rumors for the D700! Phew, that was crazy. But I knew all along that this was the camera we would see. It was so funny to see many people so adamant that Nikon would “NEVER put a D3 sensor in a D300! It would kill sales for both!”

Take care, and now we look forward to D90 and D3X rumors!

So this is all very exciting, but I’m wondering if we’re still expecting a D90 (or D80x, or whatever number it might turn out to be) announcement today or this week. I’m waiting on buying a D80 or its replacement within the next few weeks…. What are the current rumors?
