Nikon won't announce a "D700". That doesn't make any sense. The D300 just came out and they have no reason to compete with the D3. In fact, why would anyone buy a D3 is there's a smaller, lighter, cheaper version, with exactly the same resolution? Besides, when have they ever jumped names--from a D300 to a D700? If it happens...great, I'll be first in line, but I think that's just silly.

Do we need so many PC lenses? Parts of this rumor comes from the leaked D700 catalog - there were pictures of 2 lenses (http://nikonrumors.com/2008/06/18/more-nikon-d700-pictures-plus-do-i-see-some-new-lenses.aspx):

PC-E Nikkor 24 mm f/3.5

PC-E Micro Nikkor 45 mm f/2.8

So it could just be a typo from DSLGossip. It is hard for me to believe that they will release another 2 PC lenses, but why would they put them in the D700 catalog?

that is, other than the discontinuation of the 50mm AF with likely another FX coming out, which would leave the "fast normal" focal length (on FX) to only third parties (e.g. sigma) and second hand stores.

Is no one anticipating a new 50mm AF-S? Is that just wishful thinking at this point with no, even halfway reliable, info on the validity of its existence?

D300 price has dropped by around $40 to $50 this week, may be there is a reason for this.

Example Price:
JR was selling for $1699 last week, now it is $1649. I have seen similar drops at several other websites as well.
